Because ground level decks normally do not require rail, they allow for more creativity with the placement of benches, railing, and flowerboxes. This deck is a good example. The homeowners wanted rail on one portion of the deck, but chose to go with shorter rail than the standard 36" high rail to allow for more visibility. The deck also features a corner bench and a platform step on one side.
